Excessive speed or criminal speed in Arizona is a class 3 misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and up to a $500 fine. Speeding can become a crime under a couple of circumstances:

  1. Exceeding 85mph anywhere in this state can get you a criminal speeding ticket,
  2. Exceeding 35mph approaching a school crossing, and
  3. Exceeding the posted speed limit by 20mph in a business or residential district or if no speed is posted exceeding 45mph.

If you are found guilty, the MVD will also be glad to add 3 points against your license and perhaps send you to defensive driving school. A criminal speeding ticket could also lead to a suspended license and other penalties imposed by MVD.

Excessive speed should not be taken lightly. It is a crime. If you have been charged with excessive speed, call AZ Criminal Defense Attorney Jeremy Geigle at (480) 818-9943 for a free consultation.
