How to Write an Effective Mission Statement

For small business owners, having an effective mission statement is just as important as having a strong business plan. Your mission statement should inspire customers to want to know more about your ideas and your business.

Here are 10 tips for writing an effective mission statement:

  1. Before beginning, you need to ask yourself some questions: What business are you in? Why are you in this business? What are three attributes or objectives that define you or your business?
  2. Your mission statement should state your business goals and objectives. It should also mention how it’s going to make a difference in your customer’s lives.
  3. Next, what separates you from your competition? What do you have to offer that your competitors aren’t currently offering?
  4. Build a brand identity. Communicate your key values to the customer or client.
  5. Don’t write an excessively long mission statement. Keep it short and simple, but make sure you get your points across clearly.
  6. Be honest. This isn’t the time to write what you think the customer wants to hear. They’ll smell a lie from miles away.
  7. Get input from others. Having another person look over the statement and give feedback can greatly improve your mission statement.
  8. Edit. Go over it and make sure it reads smoothly. If not, edit it until it does.
  9. Once you’re finish writing your mission statement, post it everywhere you can. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
  10. Revise. In the future, things may change, and if they do, your mission statement may need to change too.
