Adoptive parents in Arizona can choose between open adoption and closed adoption. In a closed adoption, the birth parents are not given the opportunity to develop any type of relationship with the child and the adoptive family. Instead, the birth parents relinquish their rights to have any type of communication with the child or adoptive family once the child is placed in the adoptive family’s care. Closed adoptions tend to be more common than open adoptions.

In contrast, open adoptions can allow the birth parents to remain in contact with the child and adoptive family after they terminate their parental rights. Open adoptions are usually protected and enforced under the law of contracts, so legal counsel may needed to assist with this type of arrangement.
