A divorce is a life changing event that can greatly affect both parties mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. With all of the change, it is hard to keep it from greatly affecting everyday life and the workplace. One man, after receiving divorce papers from his wife, fell into drinking and one day exploded at work, leading him to be fired. This is seen more times than not, someone experiences the tragedy of a divorce and it affects them at work, wreaking havoc on the individual’s career.
Vikki Ziegler, a divorce attorney and star of the Bravo series “Untying the Knot” released some great tips to keeping divorce separate from work.
1. Avoid talking about the divorce at work:
Work is not the place to discuss divorce woes. It can affect the individuals work along with their co-workers. More times than not, it makes co-workers feel awkward and at a loss for words. It is important to keep the divorce talk at a minimum while at work.
2. Take Care of Yourself
When an individual goes through an divorce, it seems they stop caring about their appearance. While this may be okay for your date night with Netflix at home, in the workplace it is completely unprofessional. Not only do these individuals appear disheveled, but they stop going to bed regularly, eating well, and exercising. This affects their energy. Often times this directly affects the individuals work and ability to think clearly. Make sure that through the divorce you make time for yourself. Go get a massage, hang out with friends, go to the gym, meditate and read. All of this can lead to a more positive attitude and helps deal with stress.
3. Don’t Spend Money Frivolously:
Often times, people going through a divorce stop caring about their budgets and begin spending! One side of the party might decide to spend more so their ex gets less. While it is understandable to be angry and upset it is not reasonable to ruin finances. Ziegler reminds individuals there is a life after divorce, it is vital to think of things in the long term perspective.
4. Avoid Office Romances:
Office romances are never a good idea because they have to opportunity to negatively impact a career. Divorces can affect individuals judgment, especially with it comes to romantic relationships. Keep the love life out of the office and focus on the divorce at home.
Divorce is often times a tragedy for the people involved. This does not mean it has to be a tragic time in your career.
