Types of Employment Discrimination

Sexual Harassment
This includes practices from direct requests for sexual favors to workplace conditions that create a hostile environment for persons of either gender, including same sex harassment. (The “hostile environment” standard also applies to harassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, age and disability. Harassing conduct includes things like epithets, mockery, demeaning jokes and cartoons, and implied and explicit threats of violence.

Pregnancy Based Discrimination
Pregnancy, childbirth and related medical conditions must be treated in the same way as other temporary illnesses or conditions.

Religious Accommodation
An employer is required to reasonably accommodate the religious belief of an employee or prospective employee, unless doing so would impose an undue hardship.

National Origin Discrimination
It is illegal to discriminate against an individual because of birthplace, ancestry, culture or linguistic characteristics common to a specific ethnic group.

Retaliation
It is unlawful for an employer to discriminate against individuals who oppose any employment practice or who files a charge, testifies, assists or participates in any manner in an investigation, proceeding or hearing relating to discrimination.
