Richard Chae, a patent attorney from Palo Alto, California was convicted of bribery last Thursday. Chae was pulled over while driving his Lexus on February 26, 2010 in Colma at 2:40 a.m., after police suspected drunk driving. Apparently, this was not the first time Chae had been pulled over for a DUI, so the panicked attorney offered the two police officers $900 if “this could all go away.” When the cops rejected the money, Chae only increased the amount of the bribe, first to $5,000 and then to $35,000. But the money wasn’t enough to tempt the officers; Chae was arrested and the cops found $1,055 in cash and $135 in Lucky Chances Casino chips after they searched him. The attorney’s BAC was 0.13, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08.
In November, Chae was convicted of a misdemeanor DUI, and was found guilty of bribery last Thursday, June 28.
