One might consider it ironic to contract an infection during a hospital visit, but it happens far more often than it should in hospitals across the United States. Healthcare-associated infections are infections that were not present at the time of admission to a healthcare facility. While most become evident after 48 hours of hospitalization, a hospital-acquired infection may wait until after the patient is discharged to show its symptoms. 1 in 20 patients contract an infection during their hospital stay, and these infections rank as a top 10 cause of death in the US.

Cerebral palsy is a condition disrupting the motor skills and postural tone, developing in the first years of a child’s life. This disorder affects 0.002% of newborns, but a higher percentage of premature infants are diagnosed. Cerebral palsy can lead to respiratory problems, irritability, seizures, feeding problems, jitteriness, abnormal motor function, and irregular postural tone.

The number one cause of patient injuries at hospitals is falling. Patients who fall in hospitals can be left with serious injury, including traumatic brain injury which can lead to death. A 90-year-old female patient fell at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, hitting her head on the metal sill of a closet. Though she seemed fine at first, complaining only of back pain, she was unresponsive and vomiting 30 minutes later. The patient never regained responsiveness and died before the day was over.

Childbirth brings with it many potential life-threatening complications, for both the mother and the child. There are times when the birth doesn’t go as intended, and the baby can get stuck in a compromising position inside of the mother’s womb. The child’s shoulders run the risk of getting stuck on the mother’s pelvic bone during delivery, and when this happens, the nerves of the baby’s necks are impaired, causing damage to its spinal cord. This damage can affect future movement and overall function of the fingers, hands, and arms—the damage to the spinal cord in this way is known as Erb’s Palsy. While some children that suffer this fate heal within 6-24 months, 10% will live with life-long injuries.

JacksonWhite shareholder, Jared Everton has been named to the Arizona Rising Stars list as a prominent up-and-coming attorney in Arizona for 2012. No more than 2.5 percent of lawyers in Arizona are selected by the Super Lawyers research team to receive this honor annually.

In early February, California attorney, Lois Carrillo announced that he had filed a claim against the Los Angeles Unified School District on behalf of two girls and one boy that were victims of sexual assault at Miramonte Elementary School in downtown Los Angeles.

In 2005, a sophomore at Hunters Lane High School in Nashville, Tennessee rode the bus home from school and was assaulted by two other students, leaving him with serious physical injuries. The victim, Brandon Wilson, and his parents sued for damages.

As a parent, you should never have to worry about your child’s safety when you drop them off at school in the morning. You should have the right to assume that the people hired to teach your children will always have their best interests in mind. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of teachers working in the United States that use their authority to prey on vulnerable students. Alarmingly, in a 2004 survey, it was reported that 10% of US public school students have felt sexually targeted by a school employee. Sexual assault, abuse, and sexual harassment claims against teachers is said to be 100 times greater than those against Catholic priests, according to several sources.

Hearing stories of sexual abuse in day cares can be upsetting to anyone, but most especially to parents with young children. As a parent, when you enroll a child in a day care facility, you should feel comforted and assured that your child will be kept free from physical and emotional harm. It’s a travesty when a day care fails to uphold their promise to keep your child safe.

While it may not be unheard of for children to touch each other inappropriately without bad intentions, it’s when things go too far that parents should rightfully be concerned. On a parenting web forum on city-data.com, a mother posted her concern after her child was involved in an inappropriate touching incident while at daycare.
