In 2008, Ellen Wadsworth woke up Thanksgiving morning with torturous pain in both of her feet.  After arriving at a Georgia hospital, the doctor’s assistant claimed she had a skin infection called cellulitis and denied the diabetic woman entry to the hospital.  Even after the woman and her son pleaded with medical staff for admittance to the hospital, they refused and told her to go home and ice one of her legs. Around midnight, the 61-year-old was found by her son, unconscious.  He raced his mother back to the ER.  It was then that doctors noticed blocked arteries in both

12 veterans of the Oregon Army National Guard filed a lawsuit against KBR, the largest non-unionized construction company in the U.S., for exposing them to a toxin called hexavalent chromium during the Restore Iraqi Oil mission in 1993. U.S. and British soldiers were hired to guard a water treatment plant that was covered with the toxic chemical. Workers who breathe in the toxic chemical have an increased risk of developing lung cancer. One of the veterans is now confined to a wheelchair, and must breathe using an oxygen tank. The chemical can also cause damage to the eyes and skin

The New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts is facing numerous lawsuits after distributing steroid injections that were contaminated with fungal meningitis. Nearly 14,000 people were injected with the contaminated product, but so far only 280 people have filed lawsuits against the company. Attorneys representing the victims in this case expect the number of lawsuits to reach somewhere in the thousands. A total of 28 victims have died from the contaminated steroid injection that was distributed across 16 states. The victims’ attorneys are also looking to file lawsuits against the clinics that administered the steroid injections. The problem with filing a

The family of Deborah Braillard has been fighting in court for seven years over her death in a Maricopa County Jail. Braillard’s family filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and other city official for gross medical negligence. According to the lawsuit, Braillard was denied insulin for more than two days. When she was finally taken to a hospital, she died. A jury has been deliberating a proper settlement, but they haven’t reached an agreement yet. In addition to the disagreement, protestors from Citizens for a Better Arizona have disrupted the settlement according to a jury supervisor. The family has

Geraldine Nicholson went into surgery to have cancerous tissue removed from her colon. Dr. Arleen Thom performed the surgery on the 55-year-old woman, but made a fatal mistake during surgery. Thom closed Nicholson up before removing an 18-inch by 18-inch sponge from her abdomen. The sponge inside Nicholson caused infections and prevented her from receiving the proper treatment she needed for her cancer. Within a year of the surgery, Nicholson died from complications and from her cancer going untreated. Geraldine’s husband filed a lawsuit against Dr. Thom for negligence and medical malpractice. Nicholson’s attorney stated this whole incident could have

Harold Hagins walked into a dentist office complaining of a toothache. Dentist William Moody took a look in Hagins mouth and determined his wisdom teeth needed to come out. When Hagins returned for the procedure, Moody removed his wisdom teeth, but had to stop the extraction after he discovered one of Hagins’ wisdom teeth was fused to the bone. Moody left the part of the tooth that was fused to the bone intact in Hagins’ mouth and sent him on his way. That same night, Hagins admitted himself to a hospital for severe pain and facial swelling. The remaining piece

Matt McCann went to the hospital to have a herniated disk repaired and walked out with nerve damage and brain damage. During his surgery, his doctor accidently cut into his iliac artery, but didn’t notice until he suffered from cardiac arrest 36 hours later. He suffered permanent damage to the nerves that control his bladder and bowels, as well as brain damage. McCann sued the hospital for medical malpractice and sought compensation for his injury related expenses and punitive damages for the hospital’s mistake. The jury awarded McCann $2 million and even gave McCann’s ex-wife $50,000 based on her claim,

Personal Injury: Bed Sores

Bed sores, often referred to as pressure sores occur when a patient who is bedridden isn’t repositioned often enough. Unlike other illnesses and injuries, bed sores are easily prevented. David Chao, the San Diego Chargers head doctor may have his medical license revoked or suspended due to medical negligence. The California state medical board cites evidence from three negligence cases from 2007 and 2012. Two weeks ago, Chao was found liable in lawsuit from a negligence case that took place in 2003. A San Diego jury awarded $7.5 million to the patient, who suffered from a knee injury during surgery. Another patient who suffered from an injury during hip surgery was awarded $2.2 million for medical negligence. The state medical board also mentioned two other cases where Chao was

HCA, one of the world’s largest for-profit hospital chains discovered that some of their cardiologists were conducting unnecessary procedures on their patients. HCA has uncovered evidence that goes as far back as 2002 and some as recent as 2012. What HCA found is that a number of cardiologists at several different hospitals weren’t able to justify the procedures they were performing. While conducting the investigation, HCA noticed some physicians made statements in their medical reports that were misleading and made it appear that the procedures were in fact necessary. The documents HCA uncovered don’t disclose how many patients may have
