In 2008, Ellen Wadsworth woke up Thanksgiving morning with torturous pain in both of her feet.  After arriving at a Georgia hospital, the doctor’s assistant claimed she had a skin infection called cellulitis and denied the diabetic woman entry to the hospital.  Even after the woman and her son pleaded with medical staff for admittance to the hospital, they refused and told her to go home and ice one of her legs. Around midnight, the 61-year-old was found by her son, unconscious.  He raced his mother back to the ER.  It was then that doctors noticed blocked arteries in both

The New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts is facing numerous lawsuits after distributing steroid injections that were contaminated with fungal meningitis. Nearly 14,000 people were injected with the contaminated product, but so far only 280 people have filed lawsuits against the company. Attorneys representing the victims in this case expect the number of lawsuits to reach somewhere in the thousands. A total of 28 victims have died from the contaminated steroid injection that was distributed across 16 states. The victims’ attorneys are also looking to file lawsuits against the clinics that administered the steroid injections. The problem with filing a

The family of Deborah Braillard has been fighting in court for seven years over her death in a Maricopa County Jail. Braillard’s family filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and other city official for gross medical negligence. According to the lawsuit, Braillard was denied insulin for more than two days. When she was finally taken to a hospital, she died. A jury has been deliberating a proper settlement, but they haven’t reached an agreement yet. In addition to the disagreement, protestors from Citizens for a Better Arizona have disrupted the settlement according to a jury supervisor. The family has

Geraldine Nicholson went into surgery to have cancerous tissue removed from her colon. Dr. Arleen Thom performed the surgery on the 55-year-old woman, but made a fatal mistake during surgery. Thom closed Nicholson up before removing an 18-inch by 18-inch sponge from her abdomen. The sponge inside Nicholson caused infections and prevented her from receiving the proper treatment she needed for her cancer. Within a year of the surgery, Nicholson died from complications and from her cancer going untreated. Geraldine’s husband filed a lawsuit against Dr. Thom for negligence and medical malpractice. Nicholson’s attorney stated this whole incident could have

Matt McCann went to the hospital to have a herniated disk repaired and walked out with nerve damage and brain damage. During his surgery, his doctor accidently cut into his iliac artery, but didn’t notice until he suffered from cardiac arrest 36 hours later. He suffered permanent damage to the nerves that control his bladder and bowels, as well as brain damage. McCann sued the hospital for medical malpractice and sought compensation for his injury related expenses and punitive damages for the hospital’s mistake. The jury awarded McCann $2 million and even gave McCann’s ex-wife $50,000 based on her claim,

In late May, 45-year-old Jacqueline Martin of NY was awarded nearly $120 million after suffering brain damage from a series of hospital visits. Martin, who originally sought treatment for a seizure, filed a lawsuit against three New York hospitals for medical malpractice. Martin claimed the medical staff mismanaged her medications, were unresponsive in times of crises, and failed to provide essential treatments. Medical malpractice occurs when a healthcare professional (doctor, nurse, or dentist) is negligent when providing treatment to a patient. Improper treatment and negligence can cause injury to a patient, whether it’s a surgical or prescription error. Medical personnel

One might consider it ironic to contract an infection during a hospital visit, but it happens far more often than it should in hospitals across the United States. Healthcare-associated infections are infections that were not present at the time of admission to a healthcare facility. While most become evident after 48 hours of hospitalization, a hospital-acquired infection may wait until after the patient is discharged to show its symptoms. 1 in 20 patients contract an infection during their hospital stay, and these infections rank as a top 10 cause of death in the US.
